As boomers age and we live much longer this will be a growing trend. Memory loss is devastating, and effects all family members, but little ones who don't understand feel rejection. This book speaks to them and gives a opening for a conversation they may understand. You can tell the Author has some personal connection to the subject.
This is a wonderful story for young children and provides the opportunity to discuss the change in grandparents who are not able to function as they used to. It is also good that in the story the grandchild cares for his grandfather and shows that even though a child is still a child and very young he can still mean something to someone. A great story and the pictures are beautiful!
Though Terri Kelley writes charming stories for children in unique and clever rhyme, she is not afraid to tackle difficult subject matter. The central character in Grandpa Doesn't Know Me Anymore does not understand Alzheimer's disease. The child's relatives discuss Grandpa's illness behind closed doors. This story invites dialogue between children, parents, teachers, and all of those who are grappling for words to discuss Alzheimer's disease with a child.
